Setting Up Your HP DeskWriter 550c Printer
The HP DeskWriter 550c is a classic color inkjet printer that requires a direct physical connection to your computer. Setup involves ensuring the physical connection is correct and installing the necessary drivers for your operating system.
1. Initial Printer Setup (For All Users)
Before plugging the printer into your computer, you need to prepare the hardware.
- Unbox and Inspect: Remove all protective materials, tapes, and cardboard inserts from the outside and inside of the printer.
- Install Cartridges: The DeskWriter 550c uses two separate cartridges: one for Black ink and one for Tri-color ink. Open the cartridge access cover and firmly install both cartridges into their designated slots until they click into place. Close the cover.
- Load Paper: Place a stack of standard paper into the input tray and adjust the sliding paper guides so they hold the paper securely without bending it.
- Connect Power: Plug the power cable into the printer and a reliable wall outlet. Press the Power button to turn the printer on.
2. Wired Connection (The Essential Step)
The DeskWriter 550c was designed to connect directly to older computer ports.
Connection Method A: PC/Windows (Parallel Port)
- Cable Requirement: You need a Parallel Cable (sometimes called a Centronics cable) to connect the printer to a parallel port on an older PC.
